I have a secret. When I was much younger, I was a completely political person. When I was in high school, I wanted to be the first female President of the United States. I was a dedicated student of US History and did my political activist thing in high school. I went away to college, studying Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations. I wanted to work in the state department. My goal in life was all about politics and getting involved in keeping our country moving in the right direction. In our small college community, my friends and I went to our Bush-Quayle rallies at the Phi Sigma Kappa house. My dear friend did her internships in Washington, we all felt working for our Country was the ultimate in service. My senior year of college was the start of the Gulf War. I realized that I could not pursue the political life that I had planned. Not because of any opposition to war, but because I realized politics could not be my life. Since that time, my involvement in the political realm has been minimal. I vote, of course, but stay very much on the fringes of political debate. I have several friends who stayed involved in politics and I admire them in this regard. I vote, of course, but stay very much on the fringes of political debate. Until now.
We are in an exciting time in our country. Exciting and frightening. you might remember my prior post on voting. I am a lifelong supporter of equal treatment of women. My heart is bursting with pride, excitement and hope for Governor Sarah Palin. Watching her speech excited me, inspired me, reminded me of my prior dedication to service to our country.
Even more so, watching John McCain's acceptance speech, I was further inspired. During the speech, I felt on the edge of my seat, on the edge of tears. Listening to Senator McCain's speech reminded me that it should be Country First. Our country deserves the best of us. It is our duty, our right, our privilege to do what we can for our country.
Do what you can for your country. However that works for you, vote, volunteer, blog, whatever. Remember to get out and VOTE!
